Staubach, a former Cowboys quarterback, told the crowd of thousands in downtown Dallas that men should know better than to strike a woman.
“It’s amazing that we even need this rally,” Staubach told the crowd to rally Dallas called Men Against Abuse,” but the momentum needs to be done shape.”
Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith also spoke to the crowd, and Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant made a surprise appearance. In brief comments, Bryant apologized for his role in a domestic dispute in July. He was arrested for allegedly hitting his mother, but no charges were filed
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and other city leaders waged a public campaign against domestic violence after a series of high-profile crimes where women are killed or attacked, suspected of people. ” You can call a man hit a woman of many things, but you can not call him a man,” said Rawlings.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown said his department responded to more than 13,000 domestic violence calls each year, continuing high as requiring a range of social services for victims.
Rawlings, said members of his own family victims of domestic violence, said one of every two women in the U.S. are struck at some point in their lives. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence is estimated that 85 percent of domestic violence victims women.
Smith, like Staubach was a longtime fixture of the Dallas Cowboys, told the audience that one of the most fulfilling part of life to “reach out and help with stretch of the way.”
He said more people should do is to cut the number of women each year who are victims of domestic violence. He chided men unable to control their emotions.
“It is really not a real man to do,” he said.
Lara Gaither, outreach director for the Genesis Women’s Shelter in Dallas, said that in the past year or two, overall crime is down in Dallas. Excluding cases of domestic abuse.
“We can end violence until the men are part of the solution,” said Gaither before the rally.
Josh Thompson, an early childhood educator for Texas A & M at Commerce, said the most dangerous place for a child at home mom with a boyfriend who has no strong attachment to the child.
“There is lack of accountability on the part of the people,” he said.” We need people and hold each other accountable. Can we change one another by acting with commitment.”
