Miller has 48 hours to clear waivers, the clock starting on that Tuesday night, and during that time the team under the salary cap can put bid anywhere up to $ 6.2 million its owed next season (they can only bid how much cap space they have available, though). Thereafter, Miller becomes an unrestricted free agent.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to be officially ink Andrew Bynum, which means they have cap space to put in a bid. And according to Yahoo Sports, they are interested.
However, Yahoo also reported two hours later Miller is considering having back surgery to fix bulging disk, which causes teams to hesitate in making a bid. Teams Miller would have checked out and get an idea of what its going to decide.
Miller has dealt with back issues in the past few seasons, losing games in 2011-12 and almost retiring following the 2012 Finals because of it.
However, Miller told the Miami Herald on Tuesday that he thinks well. “Body feel better than [it] is a long time.” He also said he wants to play for a contender.
“It was the Pringles theory,” he said. “Once you get that taste, you need to have more.”
So, knowing all of that, it would appear that thinking back surgery can be a bit of a smokescreen to make sure he clears waivers. Miller wants to play for a contender. The Cavs are not likely to be a contender. Then there are rumbles that he prefers a Western Conference opponent. Teams said to be her players for the Rockets, Thunder and Grizzlies, among several others.
Miller needs to make it through the process of repealing the first to have his choice of where he wants to lalapag. If there is a bid by 5:00 ET Thursday, he becomes an unrestricted free agent. And really, the money he signs for is not all that important as the Heat are on the hook for the difference between his new deal if the total $ 12.8 million owed him over the next two years.
Miller, 33, was a sharpshooter key to the Heat’s last two seasons, coming to Miami’s big back-to-back championship Runs. He played 59 games last season, which was the most he’d appeared at the beginning of the 2008-09 season.
